Privacy Policy
Last updated 3 October 2026 · Applies to the Grassly iPhone app and this website
- There is no Grassly account. Your lawns, scans, photos and plans are stored on your iPhone.
- When you scan, and only after you agree in the app, your photos and lawn details are sent to our server and analysed by Google Gemini. We don't keep your photos.
- Grassly shows no ads and doesn't sell your data.
- To measure our own ads on Facebook and Instagram, Meta learns when Grassly is installed and when a free trial or a subscription starts. This comes from Meta's software in the app and from Superwall. Your iPhone asks whether Grassly may use your advertising identifier for this. Saying no changes nothing in the app.
- Our subscription screen runs on Superwall, which learns your device type, your rough location from your IP address and whether you subscribe. It never sees your photos or lawns.
- Forecasts come from MET Norway for the town you choose.
1. Who we are
The Grassly app and this website are provided by Grassly, 7 rue Toulouse-Lautrec, 11110 Coursan, France ("Grassly", "we", "us"). We decide how the personal data described here is used, which makes us the data controller under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Questions or requests: support@grassly.info.
2. What stays on your iPhone
Everything you create in Grassly is stored on your device: your lawns and their names, grass type, size, goals and growing conditions; your photos and scan results; care plans, reminders and the lawn work you log; and your settings. The Home Screen widget reads a small summary from the app on the same device.
We can't see this information. It is removed when you delete a lawn in the app or delete the app.
3. What is sent when you scan
Grassly asks for your permission before your first scan. When you then check your lawn, identify grass, check a problem or update your care plan, the app sends the following to our scan service, which forwards the analysis request to Google's Gemini API:
| What | Why | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|
| The photos you take or choose, resized, with location and camera data removed first | To identify your grass, assess the lawn and write your care plan | Not stored. Photos are handled in memory for the request only. |
| Your town or region as shown in the app (for example "Brisbane, QLD"), country, hemisphere, units and language | To use the right seasons, units and local grass names | Not stored |
| Lawn details you entered, the care you logged, a weather summary for your town and any note you add | To make the advice fit your lawn | Not stored |
| Grass identification results, keyed by a one-way code rather than your photo | To avoid analysing the same photo twice in a row | Up to 5 minutes, in memory |
| A security key created with Apple's App Attest for your installation, and daily scan counts | To confirm requests come from the genuine app and to apply fair daily limits | The key record is kept while the service runs; counts expire within 24 hours |
| Technical records: time, processing time, error codes and the size of each analysis (never photos) | To keep the service reliable and affordable | A short period in our hosting provider's logs |
Your precise location is never sent to our scan service, and Grassly doesn't ask for your name, email address or phone number to scan.
When you first open Grassly, the app also checks once that our scan service is reachable, so any question from your iPhone about using Wi-Fi and mobile data comes up then rather than during a scan. That check sends no photos or lawn details.
Who processes it
- Cloudflare, Inc. hosts our scan service. Cloudflare processes your IP address and the request in order to deliver it.
- Google LLC analyses the photos and details through the Gemini API, under the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
You can turn photo analysis off at any time in Grassly under Settings, Photo analysis. Scanning then stops until you turn it back on. Past results stay on your iPhone.
4. Weather and places
- Finding your town. When you search for your town, Apple's MapKit handles the search. If you allow location access, Grassly uses it on your iPhone to find your town. Apple's handling is described in the Apple Privacy Policy.
- Forecasts. Your iPhone requests forecasts directly from MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute) using your town's coordinates. MET Norway receives those coordinates and your IP address to answer the request, under its API terms of service.
5. Subscriptions and reminders
- Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple. We never see your payment details.
- The subscription screen is run by Superwall (Nest 22, Inc.), whose software in the app shows Grassly Premium's offers and records purchases. It sends Superwall:
- an anonymous ID created for your installation, and your iPhone's identifier for our apps (Apple's identifier for vendor);
- your device model, iOS and app versions, language, region, currency, time zone, light or dark appearance and network type, and when you installed Grassly;
- which subscription screens you saw, and your subscription status and purchases: product, price, free trials and renewals.
- Reminders are notifications scheduled on your iPhone. They are not sent through our servers.
6. Measuring our ads
We advertise Grassly on Facebook and Instagram. To see which ads lead people to install Grassly and start a subscription, Meta (Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd. for people in Europe, Meta Platforms, Inc. elsewhere) is told in two ways.
Meta's software in the app
The app includes software from Meta. It sends Meta:
- that Grassly was installed, each time it is opened, and that you finished the introduction;
- when you start a purchase, and when a free trial or a subscription starts, is restored or fails, with the plan, its price and currency, the length of any trial, the date and Apple's reference for the purchase;
- your device model, iOS and app versions, language, time zone, mobile carrier, screen size and storage size, and your IP address, from which Meta can tell your approximate area;
- an ID that Meta's software creates for your installation;
- a short technical report if Meta's software inside Grassly fails, so that Meta can fix it;
- your iPhone's advertising identifier, only if you choose "Allow" when your iPhone asks whether Grassly may track you.
Superwall's reports
Our ads link to the App Store through Superwall. If you tap one of our ads and then install Grassly, Superwall matches your install to that ad when you first open the app, using the details it receives at both moments (section 5). For everyone who uses Grassly, Superwall then tells Meta:
- when the subscription screen opens, and when a purchase is started or abandoned;
- when a free trial or a subscription starts, with the price and the currency;
- your country, an ID that Superwall creates for your installation, scrambled before it is sent, and, if you came from one of our ads, a reference to that ad click.
Superwall doesn't use your iPhone's advertising identifier for this. These reports are sent whatever you answer when your iPhone asks about tracking.
What Meta never receives, and your choice
Meta never receives your photos, your lawns, your scans or care plans, the town you chose, your name or your email address.
If you choose "Ask App Not to Track", your iPhone doesn't give Grassly or Meta the advertising identifier. Meta still receives the other information above and measures our ads in a combined, less precise way. Your choice changes nothing in Grassly, and you can change it at any time in your iPhone's Settings under Privacy & Security, Tracking.
Meta uses this information to measure our ads and to decide who sees them, and also for its own purposes under the Meta Privacy Policy. If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, Meta can connect the information to that account when you tapped one of our ads or when you allow tracking.
7. What we don't do
- We don't show ads in Grassly. Superwall's reports on our subscription screens (section 5) and Meta's ad measurement (section 6) are the only analytics in the app.
- We don't give Meta or anyone else your iPhone's advertising identifier unless you allow tracking when your iPhone asks (section 6).
- We don't sell your personal data. Meta receives only what section 6 lists.
- We don't use your photos to train AI models.
- We don't make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
8. Legal bases (EU and UK users)
- Your consent for sending photos and lawn details to Google Gemini for analysis. You can withdraw it in Settings at any time. Withdrawing doesn't affect analysis already done.
- Your consent for tracking with your iPhone's advertising identifier (section 6), given or refused when your iPhone asks. You can change it at any time in your iPhone's Settings under Privacy & Security, Tracking.
- Performing our agreement with you to provide the scans, results and plans you ask for, and to unlock and restore Grassly Premium.
- Our legitimate interests in keeping the service secure, preventing abuse and keeping it working, and in understanding which subscription screens and which of our ads work, balanced against your rights. The data used for this is minimal and contains no photos.
9. International transfers
Cloudflare, Google, Meta and Superwall may process data in the United States and other countries. Where data leaves the European Economic Area, transfers to Cloudflare, Google and Meta rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and/or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses used by these providers, and transfers to Superwall rely on the Standard Contractual Clauses in Superwall's data processing addendum.
10. Keeping and deleting data
- Data on your iPhone stays until you delete it: delete a lawn in the app, or delete the app to remove everything.
- Our scan service doesn't store photos or lawn details after answering. The periods for the security and technical records are listed in section 3.
- Superwall keeps the subscription information in section 5 while it provides its service to us. Email us to have it deleted.
- Meta keeps the ad measurement information in section 6 under its own policy. If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, you can review it there under your ad settings.
- If you email us, we keep the conversation for as long as needed to help you, then delete it within 12 months.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask us to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its use, or to receive it in a portable format. Because Grassly has no accounts and keeps your content on your device, most of these requests are handled directly in the app. For anything else, email support@grassly.info. We answer within one month.
- EU and EEA: you can complain to your local data protection authority. In France this is the CNIL (cnil.fr).
- Australia: you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au) if you are not satisfied with our answer.
- New Zealand: you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
- California and other US states: we don't sell personal information for money. The information in section 6 is shared with Meta to measure our ads. You have the right to know, delete and correct your information without being treated differently for asking.
12. Children
Grassly is made for adults looking after a lawn. It isn't directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU), and we don't knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has sent us data, email us and we will delete it.
13. Changes and contact
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change affects what is sent from your iPhone or who receives it, we will tell you in the app first.
